Eastern Cape,

South Africa.

In 2015 I was commissioned by UNICEF to photograph the development of a youth empowerment program in a number of vulnerable communities throughout the Eastern Cape province. A series of “Safe Parks” were built in these communities providing the local children with somehere safe to play together, do school work and receive care if needed.

I worked closely with Asibindi - a local child protection agency for the duration of the project. We travelled to each community together and Asibindi social care workers in each area provided me with an introduction to each new community. I worked with an interpreter - Lulamile , visiting people’s homes and schools to photograph the local people and their environment.

The street photographs below were taken on afternoons off in the towns of Mthata and Port Elizabeth. I used 35mm film and digital to document the project .
